Banana blossom
Banana blossom, also known as banana heart, is a tear-shaped flower found at the end of a banana fruit cluster. Traditionally used in Southeast Asian and Indian cuisines, it’s valued both for its nutritional benefits and unique culinary uses. The outer leaves, which are deep purple, peel away to reveal paler, tender leaves inside that are edible. Banana blossom has a slightly crunchy texture and a mild, somewhat floral and starchy flavor. It is often cooked in curries, salads, and as a meat substitute in vegan dishes due to its meaty texture. Rich in vitamins and minerals, it’s a healthful addition to any meal, offering a boost of fiber and antioxidants while being low in calories.
